- Observances of the International Days of Families focusing on the themes for the twentieth anniversary.

Resolution adopted by the Human Rights Council in Geneva
The UN Human Rights Council has adopted on June, 26th a resolution on the ‘Protection of the Family’ reaffirming “that the family, as the fundamental group of society and the natural environment for the growth and well-being of all its members and particularly children, should be afforded the necessary protection and assistance so that it can fully assume its responsibilities”.
The document is placed within the context of the recent General Assembly Resolutions on the preparations for and observance of the twentieth anniversary of the International Year of the Family and recognizes the need of “increasing cooperation at all levels on family issues and for undertaking concerted actions to strengthen family-centred policies and programmes as part of an integrated comprehensive approach to human rights and development.”
It also “decides to convene a panel discussion on the protection of the family and its members to address the implementation of States’ obligations under relevant provisions of international human rights law and to discuss challenges and best practices” and to prepare a report with recommendations for Member States.

Declaration of the Civil Society on the occasion of the
20th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family
We propose this Declaration of the Civil Society in which the basic contents of UN resolutions about the International Year of the Family are included, as well as the main recommendations of different Expert Group Meetings, particularly the European one organized in Brussels. We aim to enroll as many politicians, academics and representatives of NGOs in every country as we can, so that we can present it together with the rest of international organizations in the Commission for Social Development to be celebrated in February 2014. We also hope that its contents can become a part for the contents of a resolution by the UN General Assembly on the occasion of this anniversary.
More than 400 representatives of the civil society organizations, academics and policy makers from 70 countries have already signed the Declaration, supported by more than 240 organizations in the five continents.
